Unbeaten San Beda College showed nerves of steel down the stretch as the Lady Red Spikers overhauled a six-point deficit in the fifth set to pull off an amazing 17-25, 25-15, 25-16, 27-29, 15-12, escape over upset-conscious Letran Monday in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Red Spikers went down 2-8 to open the deciding frame but skipper Cesca Racraquin rallied SBC back, scoring four in the Mendiola-based squad’s 10-2 spurt to take a 10-9 lead, before outhustling the Lady Knights in the closing exchange for their fifth win in as many games.
SBC climbed back to a share of the lead with repeat-seeking Arellano University (5-0) and tied their best start back in 2013 when the Janine Marciano and Ces Molina-led Lady Red Spikers raced to five straight wins to open their campaign.
“’Yung presence of mind nila nandoon pa rin kahit na nakita naman natin yung laban na lamang na lamang talaga ang Letran. ‘Yung maturity ng team nandyan kaya tiwala pa rin ako na makukuha namin yung win,” said SBC coach Nemesio Gavino.
Racraquin, finished with 17 points anchored on 14 attacks while adding 13 digs and nine excellent receptions for the Lady Red Spikers. Nieza Viray scored all of her 14 points on kills, Sattriani Espiritu had 12 markers while Trisha Paras and Jiezela Viray posted 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Coming off a morale-boosting escape in the extended fourth set, Letran made an 8-2 gap but the Lady Red Spikers answered with a scorching rally to take the helm.
The Lady Knights were able to tie the set at 12 before Paras scored on a quick kill followed by Charm Simborio’s attack error that pushed San Beda at match point. Kathleen Barrinuevo yielded the match after the Letran spiker’s attack hit the antenna that ended the one-hour, 47-minute match.
Glayssa Torres led the Lady Knights with 18 points, Simborio had 14 while Jaymeleene Parin finished with 11 for Letran, which tied Jose Rizal University at 2-3 mark.
Meanwhile, the Red Spikers came back from a set down to submit the Knights, 19-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-22, to improve to 4-1 mark and a share of the third and fourth spots with reigning champion College of St. Benilde.
Letran dropped to 0-5 tied with JRU.
In juniors play, the Squires swept the winless Red Cubs, 15-25, 17-25, 13-25, for a 3-1 mark alongside defending champion Perpetual.
