Repeat-seeking Arellano University flirted with disaster before eking out a 22-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-5 come-from-behind win against an equally dangerous University of Perpetual Help side to remain unbeaten in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Banking on their championship experience and composure on Tuesday, the Lady Chiefs grabbed their sixth win in as many outings but most importantly secured at least a playoff for semifinals spot. The Lady Altas dropped to 4-2 card and saw their three-game winning streak snapped.
“Lumabas ‘yung maturity ng mg players ko and ‘yung puso ng pagiging champion lumabas. Ibig sabihin yun siguro ang nilamang namin sa Perpetual,” said Arellano U coach Obet Javier, whose squad recorded its longest winning streak yet at 18 in a row beginning last season since the Legarda-based squad joined the league in 2009.
Arellano U broke open the fifth set with a commanding 10-1 lead that ballooned to 13-4. Setter Necelle Gual scored with a hit to give the Lady Altas their fifth point but Perpetual surrendered the match with back-to-back errors from Princess Estanislao’s long service and Cidy Imbo’s attack that went out.
Graduating open spiker Jovielyn Prado pounded 16 attacks and scored four kill blocks to finish with 20 points while Andrea Marzan had 16 markers coming off 13 spikes and three kill blocks for the Lady Chiefs.
Regine Arocha added 14 markers and 13 digs while setter Sarah Verutiao had 30 excellent sets for the Lady Chiefs, who survived the match despite giving away 14 points off Perpetual’s aces.
After starting out slow, Arellano U was able to control the third set and even went ahead 20-12 in the fourth frame. The Las Pinas-based volleybelles made a huge rally in the fourth to breath down the necks of the Lady Chiefs, 20-21.
But Arellano U answered with four straight points capped by an ace by Arocha to force a decider.
Bianca Tripoli finished with 20 points coming off 12 spikes, five aces and three kill blocks for Perpetual. Imbo got 19 markers off 15 attacks and four aces while adding 11 digs and eight excellent receptions in a lost cause for the Lady Altas. Lourdes Clemente had 12 points.
In men's play, Perpetual handed Arellano U its first loss while preserving the Altas' unblemished record with a quick 25-16, 25-22, 25-17, victory.
The Altas, who are yet to lose a set this season, climbed to solo lead with a 6-0 slate and are now assured of at least a playoff for a semifinals berth. The Chiefs slid to second with a 5-1 mark.
