San Beda College skipper Cesca Racraquin sees their five-set squeaker over Letran as a good test of their character as they go deep into the crucial stretch of the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition.
The Lady Red Spikers went through the proverbial eye of the needle Monday to preserve their unbeaten slate in an amazing 17-25, 25-15, 25-16, 27-29, 15-12, escape over the upset-conscious Lady Knights at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
It took a great deal of composure from the SBC players to overhaul a 2-8 deficit early in the deciding frame and score the team's second five-set win after a narrow escape against Jose Rizal University in its season-opener.
“Kapag dikdikan ang tini-test kasi dun ay puso na rin at character ng mga players and sobrang happy ko na ang mga teammates ko kumapit,” said the Season 92 Rookie of the Year Racraquin, who led the Mendiola-based squad with 17 points anchored on 14 attacks.
Pati sila gustong manalo and sobrang happy ko na nagma-mature ang mga teammates ko kasama ako and as a team buo kami na nagmo-move forward,” added Racraquin, who had 13 digs and nine excellent receptions for a complete game.
Boosted by a gritty performance in the fourth frame to force a sudden death, Letran put San Beda to an early 8-2 hole.
But the Lady Red Spikers regrouped after the changing court, mounting a huge rally to shock the Intramuros-based squad.
Kailangan magtrabaho tayo, hindi pa tayo tapos magtrabaho muna tayo,’” said Racraquin of her pep talk that fueled the team’s comeback.
San Beda climbed back to a share of the lead with defending champion Arellano University with identical 5-0 win-loss mark.
The win also equaled San Beda’s best start in half a decade when the Janine Marciano and Ces Molina-led Lady Red Spikers started with a 5-0 record back in 2013.
The Lady Spikers can surpass that feat with a win on Wednesday against Lyceum of the Philippines University before their marquee match with the Lady Chiefs on Friday.
