San Sebastian College remained on the right track for a Final Four spot with its second straight win against the also-ran Mapua University, 25-20, 25-7, 29-31, 25-14, Tuesday in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Skipper Joyce Sta. Rita exploded with 28 points anchored on 22 attacks, four kill blocks and a pair of aces for the Lady Stags, who improved to 3-2 win-loss record tied with College of St. Benilde.
Head coach Roger Gorayeb was able to field middle blocker Julie Anne Tiangco for the first time in her return from a right knee injury.
Nikka Dalisay got 17 markers while Daurene Santos and Dangie Encarnacion added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for SSC-R.
“Nandoon pa rin naman kami, may apat pa naman kaming laro. Sana umabot pa at least nadagdagan ako ng isa pang player,” said Gorayeb.
The Lady Stags yielded the third set after the Lady Cardinals rallied late in the frame before SSC-R regrouped in the fourth frame to seal the win in the one-hour, 31-minute match.
Mapua dropped to 0-5 slate tied with Emilio Aguinaldo College.
Angeline Mangundayao had 10 points while skipper Katrina Racelis and Patria Pena finished with nine markers each for the Intramuros-based squad.
In men's play, Mapua improved to 3-2 mark after sweeping SSC-R, 26-24, 25-16, 26-24, behind Mark Egan's 14-point production.
