Shola Alvarez scattered 21 points to fuel Jose Rizal University’s Final Four bid as the Lady Bombers shocked College of St. Benilde with a rousing 25-21, 25-22, 25-21, sweep in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan on Wednesday.
The graduating hitter waxed-hot for JRU, hitting 20 of her points off attacks while anchoring the Lady Bombers' solid floor defense with 13 digs and eight excellent receptions.
JRU snapped a two-game skid to move improve to 3-3 win-loss record tied with its victim with three more games remaining in the elimination round.
Dolly Versoza scored 16 points while Karen Montojo added six for the Kalentong-based squad.
Despite their return in the win column, Lady Bombers head coach Mia Tioseco is still looking for consistency and maturity from her girls as they approach the crucial stretch of the competition.
"I think lack of confidence and composure. Doon kami nadadale lagi. ‘Yung composure namin inside the court," said Tioseco, recalling the problems they encountered in consecutive four-set losses against unbeaten Arellano University and Perpetual Help.
"Yung skills na-acquire na nila. It's all about gagamitin nila during the game. Kapag nawalan ng composure, naunahan ng takot, nakakalimutan yung skills. Nasa kanila naman na eh. Lahat naman nandiyan na eh, except that kailangang magamit ng tama," she added.
The Lady Blazers gave away 27 points off their errors and were unable to put a solid defense at the net as they allowed JRU hitters to score 43 kills.
Ranya Musa scored 12 while Rachel Austero had 10 for CSB.
In men’s play, the Blazers defused the winless Bombers, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20, for a 5-1 mark.
