Shola Alvarez slowed down on scoring and allowed newcomer Dolly Versoza to take over as Jose Rizal University boosted its bid for a Final Four berth in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition.
Versoza gave Alvarez a respite from her offensive duties, tallying 21 points anchored on 19 attacks to power the Lady Bombers to a 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, victory over the winless Mapua Lady Cardinals Sunday at the FilOil Flying Centre in San Juan.
JRU grabbed its second straight win to improve to 4-3 win-loss record at fifth spot.
Alvarez, the league-leading scorer with an average of 20 points per game, posted 15 markers while Season 92 Best Opposite hitter Karen Montojo finished with 12 for the Lady Bombers, who remained in contention for the last three Final Four berths.
Repeat-seeking Arellano University occupied the first semis spot sporting a pristine 7-0 slate.
The Lady Cardinals’ losing woes extended to seven straight and 16 in a row since last year.
Skipper Katrina Racelis got 16 points with all but one coming off attacks while Jan Morano got 10 markers for Mapua.
