Defending champion and semifinals-bound Arellano University shoots for a bounce back win and a Final Four twice-to-beat advantage when the Lady Chiefs take on San Sebastian College on Thursday in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Opening serve of the rematch of last year's championship showdown is at 11:00 a.m. followed by the College of St. Benilde and Mapua University tussle at 12:30 p.m.
The Lady Chiefs saw its 19-game winning streak that started in the elimination round of Season 92 stop to a screeching halt at the hands of the Lady Blazers, 21-25, 20-25, 25-19, 12-25, last Monday.
Despite the loss, Arellano U still sits on top of standings alongside San Beda College with identical 7-1 win-loss records. A win by the Lady Chiefs will secure them the semis incentive while handing the other twice-to-beat advantage to the Lady Red Spikers.
But it won’t be an easy task for the Obet Javier-mentored team.
The Lady Stags are going to throw everything they got to avoid elimination and avenge their Finals loss last year when the Legarda-based squad swept the then thrice-to-beat SSC-R in three games.
SSC-R sports a 5-3 slate tied with Jose Rizal University. The Lady Stags are coming off a 14-25, 22-25, 25-22, 18-25, defeat on Tuesday against San Beda.
Another loss will put the Lady Stags’ semis hopes in a dangerous position and out of their hands. If SSC-R drops its last elims game, it must hope that JRU, University of Perpetual Help and CSB won’t reach six wins to force a playoff for the last semis berth.
Meanwhile, the Lady Blazers try to solidify their Final Four bid with a good follow up win after their upset against the Lady Chiefs.
CSB holds a 4-3 card and is heavily favored to win against the Lady Cardinals, who are winless in eight games and are on a 17-game skid.
