University of Perpetual Help needed a first set beating against a team with nothing to lose to snap out of a sluggish performance Friday in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Altas flirted with disaster before regrouping to dodge an upset attempt by Letran, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-10, to secure at least a Final Four berth playoff with a 6-2 win-loss record.
Perpetual also remained in contention for the last twice-to-beat advantage in case San Beda College (7-1) suffers an upset loss to Emilio Aguinaldo College in their match, still being played as of posting.
The Las Pinas-based squad won their second straight match but head coach Macky Carino was far from satisfied with his wards mentality during the game.
“’Yung first set na ‘yun parang tiningnan muna ng team ko kung paano maglaro ‘yung Letran. Tapos saka lang nila na-realize na ganoon pala sila maglaro,” said Carino. “Sobrang relax sa first set which is hindi talaga nakatulong sa amin.”
Waking up from a tongue-lashing they received after the opening frame, Cindy Imbo and Bianca Tripoli rallied their teammates to take the match advantage in the next two sets before cruising in the fourth to seal the one-hour, 32-minute duel.
“After ng first set sinabi ko sa kanila na, ‘Hindi pwedeng hindi ganyan ang ilalaro natin, hindi tayo mananalo sa kanila. Kung gusto nating umabot sa Top 4 kailangang sisiguruhin natin ang galaw natin, kailangan umayos tayo ng laro.’ Ayun pagdating naman ng second, third and fourth nag-respond naman sila,” said Carino.
Imbo blasted 16 attacks to finish with 18 points, Tripoli had 17 markers while Lourdes Clemente and Jowie Albert Versoza finished with 11 each for the Lady Altas.
Perpetual will close the elims on Tuesday against College of St. Benilde (5-3).
The Lady Knights closed their campaign with a 3-6 mark. Glayssa Torres and Charm Simborio scored 12 each for Letran.
