University of Perpetual Help shoots to formalize its entry in the Final Four of the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition when it meets College of St. Benilde Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Perched at solo third spot with a 6-2 win-loss record, the Lady Altas are just a win away from joining semifinalists defending champion Arellano University and San Beda College, who are both armed with twice-to-beat incentives in the Final Four.
But standing in the way of Perpetual in the 12:30 p.m. match are the Lady Blazers, who sport a 5-3 win-loss record in a two-way tie with Jose Rizal University. The Season 91 champion CSB seeks to secure at least a semis berth playoff when the Lady Blazers face the Lady Altas coached by their former mentor Macky Carino.
A win by Perpetual coupled by the Lady Bombers’ victory over also-ran Lyceum of the Philippines University in their 11:00 a.m. clash will finally close the semis race with the Lady Altas taking the no. 3 seed while JRU claiming the no. 4 seat.
In case CSB wins with JRU prevailing over LPU, there will be a three-way tie at 6-3. The team with the highest tiebreak will advance in the semis while the other two teams will have a sudden death for the last Final Four seat.
If Perpetual wins and JRU loses, the Lady Bombers, Lady Blazers and San Sebastian College will fall in a three-way tie at 5-4. The team with the lowest tiebreak will be eliminated while the remaining two squads will battle it out for the no. 4 seat.
In men’s play, unbeaten Perpetual Help (8-0) guns for an elims sweep and an outright passage in the best-of-three Finals in a rematch of last year’s championship showdown with reigning titlist CSB (6-2) at 2:00 p.m.
