EAC clinches a Final Four spot, seizes solo lead
Emilio Aguinaldo College grabbed the first Final Four seat in the 93rd NCAA men's volleyball competition.
Emilio Aguinaldo College’s Paulo Cezar Lim and Joshua Mina turned back Joebert Almodiel and Rey Taneo of the defending champion Perpetual Help, 21-19, 21-17, Thursday to seize the solo lead and clinch the first Final Four spot in the 93rd NCAA men’s beach volleyball tournament at the Boardwalk in Subic Bay, Zambales.
It was the seventh straight win for Lim and Mina, who could advance straight to the best-of-three finals if they could sweep their last two outings against Lyceum of the Phl U, which was being played at press time, and Letran today.
“We’re just focused on the game. We watched how they played and we already knew how we will beat them,” said Lim.
Almodiel and Taneo, for their part, fell at joint second with the Pirates on 6-1 (win-loss) records in this event backed by Chigo Airconditioning, MTC & Infoworks, Crab & Belly, SBHATSVB, Subic Park Hotel, Bayfront Hotel, Terrace Hotel, SBMA, Balipure, Mikasa and Smart and sanctioned by Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas Inc.
LPU’s Jhonel Badua and Joeward Presnede likewise absorbed their first defeat after falling to Isaah O’neal Arda and Ruvince Abrot, 21-12, 19-21, 15-17.
In the women’s division, San Beda twins Maria Jeziela and Maria Nieza Viray overpowered EAC’s Jaylene May Lumbo and Glyka Mariz Medina, 21-6, 21-11, in a duel between unbeaten teams to zoom to the top with a perfect 6-0 mark.
Lumbo and Medina skidded to 6-1 ahead of Jose Rizal’s Shola Alvarez and Mary Grace Rivera, who trounced LPU’s Bien Elaine Juanillo and Christine Miralles, 21-10, 21-15, and Perpetual Help’s Bianca Tripoli and Marijo Medalla, who bested St. Benilde’s Jan Arianne Daguil and Melanie Torres, 21-16, 21-15, with a 4-2 slate apiece.
