Viray twins power San Beda in elims sweep
San Beda University completed a sweep of the nine-match elimination round of the 93rd NCAA women's beach volleyball competition.
San Beda University’s Jiezela and Nieza Viray routed Letran’s Miracle Mhae Mendoza and Charm Simborio, 21-15, 21-8, Friday to complete a nine-game elimination round sweep in the 93rd NCAA women’s beach volleyball tournament at the Boardwalk in Subic Bay, Zambales.
The Viray twins clinched a twice-to-beat advantage against St. Benilde’s Jan Arianne Daguil and Melanie Torres in the Final Four needing just a win to advance to the one-game championship match.
Daguil and Torres made it through by beating San Sebastian’s Alyssa Eroa and Daurene Santos and Jose Rizal’s Shola Alvarez and Dolly Grace Versoza via tiebreak.
Tied with 5-4 records, Daguil and Torres garnered 1.227 quotient points as against the 0.990 by Eroa and Santos and 0.817 by Alvarez and Verzosa.
Emilio Aguinaldo’s Jaylene May Lumbo and Glyka Mariz Medina sealed the No. 2 seed and the other twice-to-beat edge with an 8-1 card and will play No. 3 University of Perpetual Help’s Marijo Medalla and Bianca Tripoli, who wound up with a 6-3 slate.
The league has done away with the rule of a team advancing straight to the finals with an elims sweep.
Paulo Cezar Lim and Joshua Mina of Emilio Aguinaldo College also swept the men’s side with nine wins and will play Letran’s Christopher Cistina and Bobby Gatdula, who edged CSB’s Isah Arda and Ruvince Arbot for the last spot to the Final Four.
No. 2 and twice-to-beat Perpetual Help’s Joebert Almodiel and Rey Taneo tangle with Lyceum of the Philippines University tandem Jhonel Badua and Joeward Presnede.
