Lyceum of the Philippines University needed a spark in a precarious situation in the second half.
The Pirates didn’t need to look far as Jaycee Marcelino embraced the hero’s role with the usual go-to-guys struggling in the last 20 minutes of the match against upset-conscious Emilio Aguinaldo College.
Marcelino scored 13 of his career-high 24 points in the fourth quarter to rescue the Pirates from a major meltdown, 106-97, Friday in the NCAAA Season 94 seniors basketball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The sophomore came off the bench to post a personal-high scoring performance he spiced with eight boards, five steals and a couple of assists in LPU’s second win in as many games.
The Pirates went up by 31 points in the early in the third quarter, 72-41, only to see the gap narrow to 80-77 heading into the fourth with the Generals sparking a 36-8 rally in a six-minute span.
Sensing trouble, Marcelino stepped up at crunch time with CJ Perez suffering a dry spell with only three points in the fourth and big man Mike Nzeussue fouling out early in the payoff period.
Marcelino credited the toughness of his team as they kept their composure under tremendous pressure.
