Lyceum of the Philippines University flirted with disaster before coming out on top for its second win in as many games.
Lyceum of the Philippines University watched its 31-point lead in the third quarter chopped down to only three heading into the final period.
What looked to be a walk in the park win turned out to be a battle to the finish with Emilio Aguinaldo College’s gallant stand and the Pirates staving off the Generals without their big man Mike Nzeusseu.
But LPU once again banked on its reliable weapon – its stinging defense – to evade disaster as the Pirates brought down EAC, 106-97, Friday for the early hold of the solo lead in the NCAA Season 94 seniors basketball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
LPU moved up to solo top spot with its second win in as many outings.
“The guys played well but we kinda relaxed a bit in the third but again we got away with the win, I’m happy,” said LPU coach Topex Robinson.
Jaycee Marcelino paced the Pirates with 24 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists while CJ Perez had 20 markers six steals and five boards. Ralph Tansingco and Jayvee Marcelino had 11 and 10 markers, respectively, for LPU, which had 30 turnover points off the Generals' 42 errors.
The Pirates went ahead 72-41 early in the third period but were given quite a scare in the quarter as the Generals poured in 39 points in the canto to close the gap, 80-77, heading into the last 10 minutes. EAC made a 36-8 rally to close the quarter.
The Generals nailed six triples in the quarter including the Jethro Mendoza trey before the end of the period.
LPU faced another headache in fourth when Nzeusseu was taken out of the game after committing his fifth foul. But the rest of the Pirates stepped up and clamped down on defense to silence EAC.
The Intramuros-based squad, which swept the elimination round last year only to end up as runner-up behind reigning kings San Beda University Red Lions, built a huge 59-38 lead at the half while forcing EAC to throw away the ball 21 times in the first 20 minutes of action.
Camaroonian Laminou Hamadou had 34 points on 9-of-17 field goal shooting while pulling down 16 rebounds in a lost cause for the Generals. Jerome Garcia got 20 markers including four triples, Mendoza finished with 13 while Jess Bautista had 10.
