Letran flexed all its muscles up against age-old rival San Sebastian
Colegio de San Juan de Letran was not letting another collapse prevent it from entering the win column of the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
With everybody from Bong Quinto to Christian Fajarito and from JP Calvo to Jerrick Balanza doing their part, the Knights downed San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 83-76, on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Just a week ago, the offense went missing in the endgame for the Intramuros-based squad as they allowed University of Perpetual Help rally to victory. “At least the boys are nakapag-settle down na. At least, na-address namin mga mistakes namin nung first game,” a satisfied head coach Jeff Napa said post-game.
Indeed, there was no repeat in this one as six points was the closest the Golden Stags could come in the final frame.
And with their lead down to 57-63, Fajarito and JP Calvo connived for the 10-3 answer that put up a 73-57 advantage for Letran with four minutes remaining.
Baste still would not quit and pulled to within 74-81 with 10.1 ticks to go, but by then, it was too little, too late.
In the end, the Knights showed off their deep lineup en route to their first win following a season-opening loss.
Quinto had 17 points, eight rebounds, and four assists; Calvo had 16 markers and three boards; and Balanza had 15 points and three rebounds of his own. “Happy ako sa mga leaders namin kasi nadala nila yung team,” Napa said.
The frontline of Fajarito, Larry Muyang, and Jeo Ambohot also imposed their will and combined for 21 markers and 22 boards.
On the other hand, San Sebastian fell for the second time in three games. Allyn Bulanadi topped the scoring column for them with 21 points while RK Ilagan also added 18 markers.
