Letran is on the board courtesy of JP Calvo's leadership and clutch credentials
When his team needed him to lead, JP Calvo answered the call.
After Colegio de San Juan de Letran's humbling opening game loss to University of Perpetual Help, head coach Jeff Napa urged his veterans to step up and take command.
Calvo took that message to heart and led the Knights to their first win of the season with an 83-76 victory against the San Sebastian Stags last Friday.
The ever-reliable point guard put up 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting and steadily controlled his team’s offense in the second half.
Thanks to his offensive prowess, and more importantly, his leadership, he has been heralded as the second Chooks-to-Go NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week of Season 94.
“Kasi ang maganda lang dito nagtutulungan kami,” Calvo humbly said about leading the talented lineup of Letran. “Tinutulungan din nila ako kung paano ko sila dalhin.”
Napa talked to Calvo, along with fellow veteran Bong Quinto, in the hopes of steering the Knights into the right direction.
“Kinausap ko yung dalawang veterans ko,” he shared. “Pinakata ko sa kanila yung bigger picture. Yung teammates nila sumunod naman sila.”
Like a true veteran, Calvo deflected credit of his stellar play to his teammates.
“Sa dulo, sila yung kakapitan ko,” he said about his teammates. “Nagtutulungan lang kami.”
Calvo edged out Quinto, Ian Alban and Levi Dela Cruz of Arellano University, and Yankie Haruna of College St. Benilde for the weekly player citation awarded by scribes from print and online publications covering the beat.
