CJ Perez was all over the place in LPU's fifth win in a row to start the season
Ahead or behind, Lyceum of the Philippines University will keep using the same formula in the 94th Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
At the end of the day on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, that same formula still led to a 94-81 triumph for the Pirates over Mapua University.
CJ Perez did it all with 19 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, and three rebounds while Mike Nzeusseu posted a powerful double-double of 16 markers and 16 boards.
Jaycee Marcelino and MJ Ayaay also added 13 and 11 points, respectively, as LPU increased its lead in the standings to 5-0.
Behind a 29-point third quarter, they mounted a 15-point lead early in the final frame before the Cardinals battled back to as close as 76-80 inside the last four minutes. “What’s important is how we pick ourselves up. More or less, it’s just a matter of how we’re always gonna be on the same page,” head coach Topex Robinson said post-game.
It was at that point, however, that four different players contributed in an 11-2 counter that put the Pirates back on top by double-digits, 91-78.
They would not be threatened the rest of the way as their perfect record remained intact. “We know that teams are not gonna take us lightly anymore so we expect all these games to be tighter. It’s gonna benefit us because we’re always gonna be on our toes,” coach Topex said.
On the other hand, Mapua suffered its second straight setback following a win to start the season. Laurenz Victoria topped the scoring column for them with 20 points while rookie Eric Jabel also shined with 18 markers, five assists, and three rebounds.
