College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills knows full well it can count on Joel Cagulangan when it matters most.
Cagulangan did just that, scoring all of his 31 points after the first half to lead the Junior Blazers to a thrilling triumph in double overtime over very game Jose Rizal High School, 94-87, on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The graduating guard was held scoreless after the first two quarters, going 0-for-7 from the field, as the defending champions saw the Light Bombers mount a lead of as much as 16 at the midway mark of the third period. “They showed championship experience. Ang importante, the boys kept their minds in the game,” head coach Marvin Bienvenida said.
It was at that point, however, that Cagulangan went off, with six straight points to cap off a 19-4 run that pulled his team to within one, 49-50.
The De La Salle University-commit stayed hot in the final frame, igniting a 16-4 blast with nine points for a 65-57 CSB-LSGH edge.
JRU would not quit, however, and would storm right back to take a 71-68 advantage with 14.9 ticks to go in regulation before Joshua David saved the day for the Junior Blazers with a three that forced overtime. “It boiled down sa execution. Sa game-tying three ni Joshua, ang ganda ng execution ng mga bata,” coach Marvin said.
There, Cagulangan spurred his team to an 81-78 margin with 12.3 seconds left only to see Marwin Dionisio’s last gasp triple tie the tally for the Light Bombers and force a second overtime.
Unfortunately, JRU ran out of gas just as Cagulangan and David connived for a 13-3 charge and a double-digit lead, 94-84, for the defending champions.
Not long after, they were celebrating their third win in four games – a win that proved their championship heart.
CSB-LSGH’s main man also collected nine assists, three rebounds, and three steals while David chipped in 16 markers and eight boards. Inand Fornilos also contributed a 13-point, 16-rebound double-double to make sure they dodged the upset ax.
For the Light Bombers, John Amores continued opening eyes with 25 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Dionisio and John Delos Santos also posted double-doubles with the former finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds and the latter ending with 20 markers and 15 boards.
The loss dropped them to 2-3, but it also proved that they will no longer be an easy out in the tournament.
