NCAA: Quinto delivers his best game right at home in Letran

Colegio de San Juan de Letran is staking claim as one of the deepest, if not the deepest, teams in the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

From a starting unit spearheaded by Jerrick Balanza, JP Calvo, Larry Muyang, and Bong Quinto to a reserve crew led by Jeo Ambohot and Bonbon Batiller, they are, without a doubt, fully loaded in their quest for a return to the playoffs. “Meron kaming gustong i-prove sa season na ‘to,” head coach Jeff Napa said.

Still, the Knights will only go as far as main man Bong Quinto takes them.

That again was much evident on Thursday as they hosted visiting College of St. Benilde inside the Letran Gym in Intramuros, Manila.

As always, Letran started slow and found itself trailing by as much as eight.

That would have been even larger if not for Quinto who was keeping them in the game. “Nung first half, nasa homecourt nga kasi so gusto naming magpakita kami. Pero nung halftime, na-realize namin na kung ‘di kami maglaro as a team, walang mangyayari,” he shared.

The graduating forward did nothing but lead by example from there, powering his team to victory with a tough fadeaway jumper inside the last two minutes that proved to be the go-ahead basket.

Of course, Quinto was not letting the Knights get humiliated at home. “Last time ko nang maglalaro rito sa harap ng school, ayokong mapahiya kami. Number one talaga is ide-defend namin yung homecourt namin,” he said.

And it didn’t hurt either that he was determined to win so that he could dedicate it to his father Danilo. “For me talaga, sobrang special ‘tong araw na ‘to. Birthday ng tatay ko kahapon so dinedicate ko yung game sa kanya,” he said.

With that, the versatile wing did nothing but turn in his best game of the season so far – even though the likes of Justing Gutang and Yankie Haruna did their all to stop him. Asked about those matchups, he answered, “Lahat naman, feeling ko kaya naman. Kailangan ko lang i-adjust yung parang nanggigigil.”

He then continued, “Buti lagi naman akong tinutulungan ng coaches and teammates.”
