NCAA: Another big difference for Letran? A big backer

A very confident Letran is right up there with defending champion San Beda and runner-up LPU in the standings
As expected, Colegio de San Juan de Letran is just right behind heavy favorites San Beda University and Lyceum of the Philippines University in the ongoing NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
With one of the deepest, if not the deepest, lineups in all of the league, the Knights have already proven themselves to be legitimate contenders.
Of course, all starts and ends with the battle-hardened core of Jeo Ambohot, Jerrick Balanza, JP Calvo, and Bong Quinto.
They are then reinforced by big men Christian Fajarito and Larry Muyang, forwards EJ Agbong and Jeremiah Taladua, and guards Bonbon Batiller and Fran Yu.
Along with that lineup, though, the Intramuros-based squad is even more confident thanks to the presence of a new backer. “Malaking bagay talagang nandyan sila to support us all the way. Hindi nila kami iiwan,” head coach Jeff Napa said, referring to San Miguel Corporation (SMC) which pledged its support last February.
In fact, SMC Sports Director Alfrancis Chua is now also Letran’s Special Assistant to the Rector for Sports.
For the third-year mentor, that kind of backing has made the biggest difference. “Siyempre, yung confidence ng mga bata, lalong tumaas nung pumasok sila. Kaya ang laking pasasalamat namin kina boss RSA (Ramon S. Ang) and boss Al,” he shared.
Main man Quinto could only agree. “Sobrang laking tulong sila sa amin kasi hindi nila kami pinapabayaan sa mga pangangailangan namin. Kaya sobrang thankful kami kasi kami yung napili nilang suportahan,” he said.
With that sort of support, though, expectations are even greater.
Good thing that the Knights are all ready for it. “Lagi namang may pressure, pero basta ang advice lang nila sa amin, maglaro lang ang mga bata at sa part ko sa coaching, just do my best,” he said.
