NCAA: Coach Ariel was going to resign if EAC did not win
One way or the other, Ariel Sison was not letting EAC lose another game

In his very first visit to the press room in the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament, the first words out of the mouth of Emilio Aguinaldo College head coach Ariel Sison were of relief.

“Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat. Akala ko, ‘di ko na kayo makikita lahat,” the Generals’ mentor said as they scored their very first win in the season in five tries.

Those words have long been a standard statement for head coaches who have just arrested any losing slide, but apparently, coach Ariel’s words had more meaning than usual.

“Just to be honest with you, last night, I thought that if I won’t win today, I will resign,” he shared. “That’s the least I can do so that the team will win. Kung ‘di ko kayang ipanalo, then someone else should be doing it for us.”

In his first two seasons, coach Ariel compiled a 13-23 win-loss record.

Now in the NCAA Season 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament, they dropped four games in a row and was in jeopardy of going 0-5.

Instead, EAC played its best game of the season on Friday, with even little-known rookie JP Magullano coming out of nowhere to total a career-best 30 points to go along with 17 rebounds.

And the team they beat? Playoff hopeful San Sebastian College-Recoletos.

Coach Ariel was left speechless and could only thank a higher being for what transpired. “Thank God, narinig niya ako. ‘Di ko alam kung paano kami nanalo, basta nanalo kami,” he said.

Of course, the third-year mentor put the burden on himself as his team suffered one sorry loss after the other. As he put it, “Talagang tinatanong ko sa sarili ko kung baka hindi ako makakuha ng panalo. That’s what I’m afraid of e – not for myself, but for my team.”

He then continued, “Buti na lang, nakuha ko ‘to ngayon. Thank Fod na binigyan niya ako ng pag-asa na makabalik sa next game.”

Now they have gotten the monkey off their backs, the Generals have been re-energized for what’s still to come. “Talagang morale-boosting ‘to sa amin lalo na sa akin. Kailangan na kailangan namin ‘to,” he said.
