NCAA: Bolick outduels Quinto as San Beda tops Letran in OT
The San Beda-Letran rivalry has heated up anew

It was a clash between archrivals as well as a clash of styles on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

In the end, Robert Bolick and Donald Tankoua’s guts and San Beda University’s shooting proved to be better than Bong Quinto’s might and Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s size in an 80-76 decision in overtime.

Bolick and Tankoua yet again came up clutch as the defending champions had yet another win, their fifth in a row to begin their title defense in the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament. “It was a tough game against Letran and it’s really a rivalry worth watching,” head coach Boyet Fernandez said.

Bolick finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and two steals while Tankoua ended with 11 markers and 13 boards.

It was also those two who connived for San Beda’s last five points with the graduating guard hitting the game-tying and win-icing free throws and the Cameroonian powerhouse hitting a short stab in the middle of it all. “Credit to Letran, they did a good job in the fourth and that’s why they forced overtime,” coach Boyet said.

Indeed, Jerrick Balanza put the Knights up by two with three ticks to go in regulation before Javee Mocon found Tankoua beneath the basket for a reverse that forced overtime.

In the extra period, the archrivals were still going at it with JP Calvo only granting Letran a 76-75 lead.

That would be their last make in the last two minutes, however, as the Red Lion defense stood strong while Bolick and Tankoua took care of the other end.

Aside from the clutch free throws, San Beda was helped out by their long-range shooting with a total of 12 triples – two coming from AC Soberano who fired both in overtime. “AC is the epitome of stepping up,” his mentor said.

That was more than enough to compensate for their archrivals’ dominance inside.

The Knights won the battle of inside points, 38-20, with Quinto showing the way with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. JP Calvo also added 14 markers, six assists, four boards, and three steals.

With their offense going missing in the last two minutes of the extra period, though, they saw their four-game win run come to an end and now stand at 4-2.
