Bong Quinto carried Letran from 11 points down and to a near-takedown of archrival San Beda
Colegio de San Juan de Letran main man Bong Quinto was ready and raring to wage war against archrival San Beda University on Friday.
“Two years ago na yung huling nanalo kami,” he told reporters post-game. “Miss na miss ko na rin talaga Beda kasi nung offseason, ‘di ko sila nakalaban.”
The last time the Knights got one over the Red Lions was back in Game 3 of the NCAA Season 91 Men’s Basketball Finals.
Since then, they have lost all four rivalry games.
Still, Quinto was full of confidence heading into this one. “Ang mindset ko talaga rito, alam kong mananalo kami sa game,” he said.
Only, Robert Bolick and Donald Tankoua had other plans and snatched away the win for San Beda.
In the end, just like Letran head coach Jeff Napa, Quinto was left to rue the golden opportunity they let slip away. “Nakita kong binigay na sa amin, pero ‘di lang talaga na-grab yung last play. Yun talaga yun,” he said.
Nonetheless, there are silver linings in the close loss – especially the fight the Knights showed in battling back from an 11-point deficit in the third quarter.
Of course, that starts and ends with their team leader. “Bong is a leader with good character. He’s the heart and soul of our team,” coach Jeff said of his prized ward who had 21 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists to his name.
He then continued, “He played 38 minutes tapos hindi bumigay hanggang dulo. Lahat naman, binigay niya, kaya lang nagkulang kami.”
For Quinto, though, he is merely returning the full faith of his coaches. As he put it, “Nakaka-proud din yung coaches namin, lalo si Coach Jeff. Grabe yung kumpyansa na binibigay niya sa lahat ng players.”
He also added, “Kita niyo naman, lahat pwede mag-contribute sa amin, di lang kami ni [JP] Calvo, [Jerrick] Balanza.”
