NCAA: Two wins in one game for coaches Vergel and TY
JRU's Vergel Meneses and CSB's TY Tang are the only two coaches who know how it feels to get two wins in just one game

College of St. Benilde was at the bottom half of the standings before getting two wins in two days.

The Blazers were standing below .500 at 3-4 before an NCAA ruling overturned their first loss in the tournament.

San Sebastian College-Recoletos has been forced to forfeit two of its wins as the league has decided with finality last Thursday in favor of disciplinary action for RK Ilagan.

Ilagan, one of Baste’s top guns, was put under investigation by the league’s management committee for playing in a commercial league in Quezon City in late June.

The third-year guard averaged 13.8 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.8 rebounds in San Sebastian’s first five games – two ending up in wins.

With the league’s decision, however, those two wins will have to be overturned and the Golden Stags’ record is now 1-8.

Conversely, the two teams Baste beat in those two games will gain a win. That gave CSB a win to put it over .500 at 4-3 and Jose Rizal University its first win in seven games.

The Blazers wasted no time in building on that win with another win, this one a victory versus Arellano University on Friday.

And with two wins in two days, the Taft-based team rose from seventh in the standings to fourth.

That did rapid development did not escape head coach TY Tang. “Sa buong career ko, ngayon lang ata ako nakakita ng two wins in one game,” he candidly told reporters post-game.

Likewise, JRU was languishing at the bottom of the standings, losing all of its first seven games before the league’s ruling turned their 0-7 record to 1-6.

A day later, the Heavy Bombers then edged out Emilio Aguinaldo College for their first win – on the basketball court, that is.

Now, they are three spots out of the bottom of the standings at 2-6.

Their win run may be shortlived, however, as their next assignment is defending champion San Beda University.

Still, head coach Vergel Meneses said anything could happen. As he put it, “We’ll see. Bilog ang bola, malay mo makatsamba naman kami.”

He then continued, “Ganyan lang ang JRU ngayon – tsamba-tsamba lang.”
