NCAA: Perez-led LPU exacts revenge on Bolick’s San Beda
CJ Perez's big-time triple took down San Beda and took the win for LPU in a rematch of last year's Finals

This time around, it was CJ Perez who had the big-time triple to frustrate Robert Bolick.

This time around, it was Lyceum of the Philippines University which came out on top of San Beda University.

Last year’s champion and runner-up went toe-to-toe once more, but at the end of it all on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, it was Perez and the Pirates who were raising their fists in victory as they fought off Bolick and the Red Lions, 73-66.

The reigning and defending MVP’s booming triple with 28.9 ticks to go capped off a 6-0 finishing kick that thrusted LPU through San Beda and onto a 9-0 start in the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament. “We know what San Beda could do and it’s going to be something that people are watching. We want to imprint our name and our school whenever people watch our games,” head coach Topex Robinson said.

In last season’s Finals, it was Bolick who hit big-time triples in Games 1 and 2 that essentially won the championship for San Beda.

The Pirates didn’t give him any such chance this time around just as Perez and Jaycee Marcelino took care of the offense.

Following Perez’s triple that increased their lead from one to four, they forced Javee Mocon and Franz Abuda into tough shots they both missed.

In the ensuing possession, Marcelino leaked out for an easy layup. He was also fouled and made good on the bonus to put up what proved to be the final winning margin.

In the end, Perez had 22 points on top of 13 rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Marcelino had 13 markers and four boards.

In the end, LPU avenged its sorry loss in the championship round and extended its unbeaten run in the eliminations to 27 games.

For the Red Lions, Donald Tankoua showed the way with a 19-point, 18-rebound double-double while Bolick had 18 markers, five boards, and three assists. They suffered their first setback in seven games.
