NCAA: San Beda’s coach Boyet: 'That shot of Perez is on me'
Boyet Fernandez took responsibility for the defensive call that gave CJ Perez a wide open look at a triple

San Beda University was chasing down a one-point deficit with under two minutes to go on Tuesday.

However, the possession was with Lyceum of the Philippines University.

Off a timeout, the Pirates perfectly executed a play designed by assistant coach Jeff Perlas and found CJ Perez wide open for three.

The reigning and defending MVP then wasted no time in taking and making the triple that uncorked a 6-0 finishing kick that thrusted his team right through the Red Lions.

According to San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez, however, they were only willing to give Perez that shot. “That shot of Perez is a shot we want to give. He’s been missing that shot and that’s the only (three) he made,” he told reporters post-game.

He then continued, “That’s why I told the boys that shot of Perez is on me. If he makes it, he makes it.”

Indeed, before that three in the endgame, Perez went 0-of-2 from deep – and his only triple that went in just so happened to be one of the biggest shots.

Making things worse for the Red Lions, however, they also paid for giving another open look to Nino Ibanez.

With the two teams all even at 64 inside the last two minutes, Ibanez was left alone in the corner before hitting a three.

That proved to be the go-ahead basket for LPU.

Again, coach Boyet said they also had no problems with letting Ibanez take that shot. As he put it, “Even that Ibanez shot in the corner, that’s also a shot we want to give up.”

Main man Robert Bolick, shared the same sentiment. “Yung dalawa, ‘di naman sila nakaka-shoot e. They made both nung last two minutes, pero yun yung binibigay namin e,” he shared.

Ibanez’s only make, and only points, in the game was that shot as he wound up with three points in 1-of-5 shooting.

After what he did, could he have changed San Beda’s game plan from here on out?
