Letran arrested a two-game skid by overpowering Intramuros rival Mapua
Colegio de San Juan de Letran had fallen short in back-to-back games up against the top teams in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Bong Quinto made sure there wasn’t any falling short on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The graduating forward tallied his first career triple-double and the Knights trampled all over Mapua University, 84-63, to take the first skirmish in this season’s Battle of Intramuros.
Quinto’s inside basket and bonus and succeeding short stab punctuated a 13-4 start for Letran. “I’m happy we came out with a convincing win,” a more than satisfied head coach Jeff Napa said post-game.
They would not look back all the way to a return into the winners’ circle now at 5-3 – tied for fourth with College of St. Benilde.
In the end, Quinto had 12 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds while JP Calvo topped the scoring column with 20 markers on top of three dimes and three boards.
The frontline of Larry Muyang, Christian Fajarito, and Jeo Ambohot was also a force with a combined 32 points and 36 rebounds. By themselves, those three outrebounded all of the Cardinals who only had 35 boards as a team.
The Knights had lost two games in a row to rivals San Beda University and Lyceum of the Philippines University before getting thus much-needed win. “At least, na-address na namin yung mistakes namin the last two games,” coach Jeff said.
Now, all they need is to take care of business against Emilio Aguinaldo College to be assured of being inside the top four after the first round.
For Mapua, Arvin Gamboa was the lone bright spot with 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. After a 2-1 start to the season, they have now lost five in a row.
