Bong Quinto is proving to be the prototype point forward for modern basketball
Bong Quinto had for himself a triple-double last Tuesday.
That was the NCAA’s first triple-double since Jiovani Jalalon, then of Arellano University, recorded one in October 2015.
Just three days later, Quinto had for himself another triple-double.
That was the league’s first back-to-back triple-doubles since Scottie Thompson did it at the expense of Emilio Aguinaldo College and College of St. Benilde.
Yes, Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s main man has just done something that only the likes of Jiovani Jalalon and Scottie Thompson have done.
Quinto’s personal tear, according to him, is all thanks to head coach Jeff Napa. “Yung kumpyansa na binibigay ni coach Jeff sa amin, simula sa akin hanggang sa bench, grabe talaga. Pasalamat kami na meron kaming coach na kagaya ni coach Jeff,” he shared.
That is exactly why the graduating forward is doing is all not to let down his mentor. “May tiwala sa akin si coach Jeff kaya ako naman, binabalik ko yung tiwala sa kakampi ko,” he said.
It took three years to build that strong bond between coach and main man, but the Knights only believe that it’s better late than never. As Quinto put it, “Sa totoo lang, dapat nung simula nung dumating si coach Jeff, dapat andun na talaga kaso nga, naging mahaba yung adjustment. Ngayon, buti buong-buo na kami.”
He then continued, “Sabi nga ni coach Jeff, andito na kami. Ibabalik namin kung ano talaga yung Letran.”
With its head coach, top gun, and everybody else fully engaged, Letran is nothing but confident it can return to the Final Four, and even get farther, for the first time since winning it all in 2015.
And for them, that’s all that matter. “Nung 2015 nga, wala naman naging awardee sa amin, pero nakuha namin yung championship. Ang main goal namin ngayon ay yung championship kasi makuha mo man yung award, ang matatandaan talaga ay yung championship,” Quinto said.
He then continued, “Yun yung goal namin ngayon. Extra na lang yun kung deserving ako o kung sino man sa amin.”
