NCAA: Red Cubs move up to solo third in narrow escape

San Beda University moved up to solo third spot after a narrow escape over Jose Rizal University, 65-63, Tuesday in the NCAA Season 94 juniors basketball at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Red Cubs closed the first round of eliminations with a 6-3 win-loss record behind league-leading De La Salle University-Greenhills (8-1) and Mapua University (7-2).

Jade Talampas finished with a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds for San Beda, which won its six of last seven games. Zach Estacio had eight markers while Art Oliva and Justine Sanchez combined for 14 points for the Red Cubs.

The Light Bombers absorbed its fourth loss in nine games to slide to fourth tied with University of Perpetual Help.

John Delos Santos posted 14 points while Ronald Bucoy had 11 for JRU.

Meanwhile, the Junior Altas added more woes to a slumping Arellano University with an 88-71 victory for a 5-4 card.

Emman Galman bullied his way to a double-double with 25 points on 10-of-14 rebounds and pulled down 13 rebounds to pace Perpetual. Edzel Galoy had 13 markers while Yukihiro Kawamura and Rey Barcuma registered 12 and 10 markers, respectively.

The Braves suffered their fifth loss in the last six games after starting their campaign with three straight wins for a 4-5 record.

Romuel Junsay had 17 points and 15 boards in a lost cause for the Arellano U. Resty Fornis and John Recto scored 14 and 13, respectively, while Aaron Fermin added 10 for the Braves.
