NCAA: San Beda blows out JRU

San Beda University cruised to an easy win over Jose Rizal University.
No 50 points this time.
Not only for San Beda University’s Robert Bolick but also for the whole Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers.
Bolick had a ‘dry’ outing after raining down buckets in the Red Lions’ previous conquest but San Beda didn’t need to get that much offensive thrust from its best scorer anyway to waylay a woeful Heavy Bombers side, 77-40, Tuesday to end the NCAA Season 94 seniors basketball first round eliminations on a high note at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
The Red Lions limited JRU to only five points in the third quarter to turn an already-wide, 40-25, lead into a punishing blowout as San Beda ended the round with an 8-1 record despite Bolick’s quiet scoring – a far cry from his 50-point explosion in a 98-79 win over Arellano University.
Calvin Oftana scored 16 points to pace the Mendiola-based squad while AC Soberano added 11 markers on 4-of-6 field goal shooting including three from beyond the arc. Javee Mocon finished with nine while Eugene Toba had seven for the Red Lions.
Bolick only had four points in 2-of-four shooting and sat out the whole fourth quarter.
"I'm really happy the way my boys played today. We really prepared really hard for JRU so that we can finish the first round with a win and be ready for the second round," said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez, who gave all his wards playing time while having the luxury of resting Bolick.
Soberano’s trey pushed the Red Lions’ lead to 75-35 with three minutes left in the game.
The Heavy Bombers dropped to 2-7 tied with Emilio Aguinaldo College and Mapua University.
Karl Bodon had nine points, Jed Mendoza finished with seven while Leo Esguerra and Axel Doromal combined for 10 markers for JRU.
