Three years ago, the NCAA, the oldest collegiate athletic league in the Philippines witnessed a historic duel between two of its brightest stars in men’s basketball.
Jio Jalalon of the Arellano Chiefs and Scottie Thompson of the Perpetual Help Altas each dropped a triple-double in a monumental season 91 match-up last September 4, 2015.
That was the first, and so far the only time two players from opposing squads reached double digits in three major statistical categories in league history.
Thompson messed around and notched 24 points, 11 assists, and 12 rebounds for his then-fifth triple-double of the season.
But it was Jalalon’s monster effort — 32 points, 15 assists, and 10 rebounds — his second triple-double of the year, that outshone Scottie’s all-around brilliance as Arellano outlasted Perpetual, 84-77 in a thrilling overtime affair.
The two statistical studs eventually earned Mythical Team selections for the season.
Since then, the two NCAA legends have been causing problems in the pros, with Thompson recently winning the Finals MVP award in Ginebra’s championship triumph in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, and Jalalon earning a key spot in Magnolia’s rotation.
As of now, Letran’s heady small forward Bong Quinto seems to be following the footsteps of former stat-stuffing NCAA stars, dropping triple-doubles in each the Knights’ past two games, norming 12 PPG, 10RPG, and 10 APG.
