Robert Bolick was unabe to help San Beda in holding off archrival Letran
San Beda University re-asserted its mastery over archrival Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Tuesday.
With a 74-68 win, the Red Lions have now triumphed over the Knights in the last six times the two teams have met.
However, there were no smiles on the faces of the defending champions after the final buzzer sounded.
That was also the case throughout head coach Boyet Fernandez and big man Donald Tankoua’s post-win interview. “First three quarters, we were San Beda. Fourth quarter, I don’t know who’s that team,” the mentor, usually cool and collected, told reporters inside the press room.
He then continued, “I’m really pissed off with the way we played in the fourth quarter.”
Indeed, San Beda mounted a lead of as much as 22 early in the final frame only to see its archrival come storming right back.
Behind a 23-2 run, Letran pulled to as near as one point, 68-69, with 16.8 ticks to go. “(My players) thought it was already a won game for us so I think and I hope that they realize what (happened) right now. The game is not yet over until the final buzzer sounds,” coach Boyet said.
It was only through Tankoua’s hustle and Joe Presbitero’s steady hands that the Red Lions finally came away with the win. To them, their mentor gave all the credit in saying, “I do thank the guys who played the last one minute – Joe, AC [Soberano], Franz [Abuda], Donald, and Javee Mocon – for really stepping up.”
He then continued, “Medyo nag-foul out lang (kasi) si Robert [Bolick]. I hope Robert could take good care of his fouls.”
With under a minute remaining, Bolick picked up his fifth and final foul in the game.
For coach Boyet, that cannot be a sustainable recipe for success even though they have now won four in a row. As he put it, “I’m happy that somebody stepped up, but as what I’ve said (before), wherever Robert goes, we go.”
He then continued, “Muntik na kaming matalo ngayon. I’m sure Robert will be back on Friday.”
