Too late the hero for Bong Quinto and Letran in their rivalry game against San Beda

Since 2015, Colegio de San Juan de Letran is yet to win over archrival San Beda University.

Falling to the Red Lions, 68-74, on Tuesday, the Knights under Jeff Napa are now 0-6 against the Red Lions.

Their last win in the rivalry series was in Game 3 of the Season 91 Finals.

Still, the Intramuros-based squad didn’t go down without a fight, battling back from a 22-point deficit early in the final frame and coming as close as one point with under 20 seconds to go.

In the end, they lost by six – not that far from their four-point overtime defeat in the first round.

However, Letran wants no more part of moral victories. “Wala namang nakakaalala nung silver lining na nakahabol kami. Ang importate pa rin, yung panalo e,” head coach Jeff Napa told reporters post-game.

He then continued, “Kahit anong ginawa namin nung fourth quarter, nakakahiya pa rin yung nilaro namin nung first to third.”

Even more so because they know very well they could avoided falling behind by 22 points. “Bad start e. Nag-relax kami, ‘di kami naglaro as a team kaya ayun, nabaon kami,” main man Bong Quinto said.

He then continued, “Pinahirapan namin sarili namin. Nasa huli talaga (ang) pagsisisi.”

Coach Jeff could only agree with Quinto that the Knights made it more difficult than it should have been on themselves. “We played bad. Kumbaga, ginawa naming tanga yung sarili namin kasi yung lahat ng preparation, tama so it’s a matter of execution,” he shared.

That was all because save for that spurt in the last six minutes, their effort was lacking. “Yung effort at commitment, yun ang nawala e. ‘Di kami natalo sa numbers kundi yung desire na gawin yung tama,” the Letran mentor said.

Still, in the end, just like he did after the first round loss, coach Jeff said all of this is on him. As he put it, “I take full responsibility sa talong ‘to. Kasalanan ko ang lahat.”

He then continued, “‘Di nag-deliver players ko so kasalanan talaga ng coach yun.”
