Coach Frankie on preventing an LPU sweep: ‘Akin lang yun’
Frankie Lim has added yet another feather to his cap by coaching Perpetual into taking down erstwhile undefeated in the eliminations LPU

University of Perpetual Help is the first team in two years to down Lyceum of the Philippines University in the elimination round.

Trailing by nine inside the last four minutes, the Altas just kept on coming until they finally broke through and took down the erstwhile perfect Pirates.

Through it all, it was head coach Frankie Lim’s voice in the ears of his players. “To hold LPU, a very, very strong team to 13 points in the last quarter is just something else. I just have to give it to my guys,” he told reporters post-game.

With the win, Coach Frankie and his boys have sent a statement that they are here to contend.

More than that, Perps’ win has major implications on the tournament format – as the Pirates’ loss assures that there will be a Final Four instead of a stepladder playoffs.

Yes, LPU will not be able to get a clean sweep of the eliminations for the second straight season and so, will not be automatically advancing into the Finals.

That also means that, well, the Pirates will again not be able to complete a perfect season.

In a way, that’s just how coach Frankie wants it. “Well, it’s always nice to beat the strongest team in the league. Tapos, isa pa pala, edi wala na silang sweep,” he said.

He then continued, “‘Di ba napakasarap? Pwede na silang dumiretso basta walang sweep. Akin lang yung sweep.”

Then with San Beda University in 2010, Lim and the Red Lions won the championship without dropping a single game.

No other team has repeated the feat since then.

Turning to more pressing matters, though, the now-Perps head coach said this will only help their playoff push. As he put it, “Actually, malaking bagay yung victory because we now have LPU helping us beating the teams (ahead of us) para mailubog.”

That doesn’t mean they are resting on their laurels just yet, however. “Just the same, we have to beat the teams we’re supposed to beat. We’re playing JRU, Mapua our next two games and kailangan talunin namin yun kasi pag natalo kami e balewala ito,” coach Frankie said.
