CSB put a stop to its two-game slide by jumping on Arellano
College of St. Benilde was not going through a prolonged slump in the middle of a playoff push in the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
First-year players Justin Gutang and Robbie Nayve saw to that, combining to carry the Blazers past Arellano University, 89-73, on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
After back-to-back losses, CSB has re-entered the winners’ circle now at 8-5. “Definitely, we regained our identity. This is good because our goal this season is within reach,” head coach TY Tang said post-game.
Indeed, Gutang went back to work and wound up with 23 points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
He had much welcome help from Nayve who contributed a career-high 16 points, four rebounds, and two assists in his first game with extended minutes of play.
Clement Leutcheu and Yankie Haruna then merged for 23 points and 19 rebounds as the Blazers made a living inside the paint where they outscores their opponents, 52-32.
The win is much-needed as it kept solo fourth for them.
For the Chiefs, Ian Alban topped the scoring column with 22 points.
They lost their first game without Jerry Codinera calling the shots and now stand at 4-8.
