Prince Eze got the game-winner as Perpetual took down erstwhile undefeated LPU
There will be no sweep in the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament, but there very well is a determined and dangerous University of Perpetual Help.
Prince Eze got the game-winner, but it wouldn’t have been possible if not for the Altas’ stifling defense as they stunned Lyceum of the Philippines University, 83-81, on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
This is the Pirates’ first loss in the elimination round since September 23, 2016. Since then, they won 30 elims games in a row.
That streak looked like it would be continuing in this one as they had a nine-point lead, 78-69, inside the last four minutes.
It was at that point, however, that Perps turned it up on defense
At the other end, Edgar Charcos willed them back in the game with clutch baskets, the last of which tied the tally at 81-all with 67 ticks to go on the clock.
From there, the two teams traded a couple of defensive stops and the game looked like it was going into overtime as Tonton Peralta’s triple clanged off the side of the ring.
Eze was at the right place at the right time, though, and hauled in the offensive rebound then and wasted no time putting up a shot.
Not long after, the ball fell through the net and Perpetual was celebrating its biggest win in two years.
Eze ended upwith a monster double-double of 25 points and 23 rebounds while Charcos finished with 20 markers, six boards, three assists, and two steals.
Wings AJ Coronel and Kim Aurin combined for 21 points, seven assists, and six rebounds to help the Altas improve to 7-5 – just right behind 8-4 Colegio de San Juan de Letran and 8-5 College of St. Benilde.
For LPU, Jaycee Marcelino topped the scoring column with 16 points while CJ Perez just missed out on a triple-double with 11 markers, 12 rebounds, nine assists, and five steals.
Even with the stunning loss, they are still at the top spot at 12-1.
