Bong Quinto and Letran bounced back big-time by crushing Intramuros rival Mapua
Bong Quinto has been doing it all for Colegio de San Juan de Letran throughout the 94th Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
That didn’t change on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre as he got his third triple-double of the tournament all while leading the Knights’ charge right through Intramuros rival Mapua University, 84-69.
The captain wound up with 11 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists as his team stood strong at solo third now at 8-4. “This is a good win for us coming off a bad game against San Beda. At least, we bounced back with a statement win against Mapua,” head coach Jeff Napa said post-game.
The Cardinals were actually ahead by four early in the second until Quinto spearheaded a 26-3 surge that put Letran in front, 45-26, late in the quarter.
The Knights would never relinquish both the double-digit lead and the momentum until the final buzzer.
As always, JP Calvo was with Quinto by scoring a career-high 26 points in efficient 9-of-13 shooting. The imposing frontline of Christian Fajarito, Larry Muyang, and Jeo Ambohot then combined for 26 points, 24 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.
Though they gained much-needed separation from fourth-running College of St. Benilde, coach Jeff said they still could not rest easy. “Hindi pa rin pwede mag-relax kasi we need to lock down the number three. Kailangan, trabahuin pa rin namin mga remaining games namin,” he said.
For Mapua, Arvin Gamboa topped the scoring column with 17 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Without an answer for either Quinto or Calvo, however, they dropped back down in the standings now at 4-9.
