NCAA: Letran stands ground at third, stomps down on JRU
JP Calvo and Letran still have the inside track at the third-seed

Bong Quinto and JP Calvo both had bounce back games even as Koy Galvelo continued stepping up for Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Quinto stuffed the stat sheet anew, Calvo swished the nets, and Galvelo and Yu scored at will in the Knights’ 89-79 romp through already-eliminated Jose Rizal University on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The team captain flirted with another triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists while his running mate contributed 13 markers, six dimes, and five boards to lead Letran to a 10-4 standing. “Good thing, naga-guide (yung bench) ng mga leaders at yung mga leaders, willing mag-sacrifice,” head coach Jeff Napa said post-game.

Galvelo only continued his hot shooting and had 16 points build on four triples in this one.

From a close contest after the first period, the Knights rampaged to a 35-point second quartet to turn the game into a blowout.

They would not be threatened the rest of the way.

With the win, they kept their distance from fourth-running 9-5 University of Perpetual Help and now fifth-running 8-6 College of St. Benilde.

The third-seed is far from a lock for Letran, however, especially with showdowns with top team Lyceum of the Philippines University and dangerous San Sebastian College-Recoletos up next. “Next week, mabigat na yung laban na papasukin namin. Hindi kami pwedeng mag-relax so mabuti naman, nag-step up yung shock troopers,” coach Jeff said.

For the Heavy Bombers, Jed Mendoza showed the way as always with 25 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Overpowered by their dominant opponents, though, they dropped to 2-13 in the standings.
