NCAA: Perez-led LPU bounces back while also booting out CSB
LPU is yet to have a losing skid in the elimination round ever since CJ Perez came along (FILE PHOTO)
CJ Perez was a non-factor in the second half for Lyceum of the Philippines University in their second loss in the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Perez more than made up for that on Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, scattering 17 points all throughout as the Pirates downed College of St. Benilde, 77-64.
Last Friday against Colegio de San Juan de Letran, the reigning and defending MVP went scoreless in the second half.
He made sure no such thing happened this time around while also making his mark elsewhere with 10 rebounds, four steals, and an assist.
Still, it was actually Tosi Tansingco and Jaycee Marcelino who fired three triples in a row to detonate LPU’s 9-2 blast to begin the game.
The Blazers kept coming from that point, but Perez and company just had all the answers as they hiked their record to 15-2.
He was flanked by Mike Nzeusseu who had 13 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks as well as MJ Ayaay who had 10 markers and five boards.
In the last two minutes, it was Reymar Caduyac who took charge with all but four of his 10 points to go along with a total of seven assists, five rebounds, and two steals.
With the bounce back win, the Pirates are now assured of a top two finish after the elimination round. That means they will have a twice-to-beat advantage for the Final Four.
Along with that, the decision also eliminates CSB from contention.
Justin Gutang showed the way for them in this one with 13 points and seven rebounds.
