San Beda sent LPU to its third loss in the last six games
The last time San Beda University defeated Lyceum of the Philippines University in the elimination round was in 2016.
Since that time, the Pirates have had the number of the Red Lions – again, in the elimination round.
The traditional powerhouse finally got one over the upstart contenders on Thursday, imposing its will en route to a well-earned 75-68 win.
This is the first time in the last two years that they have triumphed over their new challengers in the eliminations.
For that, of course, San Beda is nothing but glad. “We’re happy we got this one and that the monkey is finally off our backs,” head coach Boyet Fernandez told reporters post-game.
He then continued, “Everybody’s been saying that we cannot beat LPU so that was really our motto for today. Naging barometer namin yun and I’m happy the guys stepped up today.”
Humble as always, coach Boyet deflected credit for the win to his boys. “I salute the boys and sana, we continue playing this well,” he said.
In fact, the always amiable mentor even gave credit to other coaches. As he put it, “I do thank the coaches from other teams because I watch their games. I say how the two teams beat Lyceum so I think we got the cue from that.”
Coach Boyet was referring to University of Perpetual Help and Colegio de San Juan de Letran, which both beat LPU before the Red Lions. “Ayan naman ang trabaho at saka ng scouting,” he said.
Nonetheless, the defending champions still had nothing but respect for the felled foes. “It’s a tough game, they’re a really tough team. Good job to coach Topex [Robinson] and the rest of the LPU team,” their head coach said.
