This CSB team that just downed Letran will remain intact a year from now
The College of St. Benilde that was a pleasant surprise in the 94th Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament will be back and better a year from now.
For now, however, the young Blazers showed just what they could be capable of, dominating playoff team Colegio de San Juan de Letran from start to finish, 94-81, on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Clement Leutcheu did damage against the Knights’ imposing frontline while Justin Gutang also made his mark in CSB’s season-ending win.
Both players will still be back next year alongside team captain Yankie Haruna and guards Prince Carlos, Unique Naboa, and Jimboy Pasturan. There, they will be out to build on their 10-8 campaign this season.
The Blazers’ performance against a Final Four-bound team is only reason to hope as their will to win was evident all throughout.
In the opening salvo alone, they scored 29 points and by halftime, already had 50 points on 57 percent shooting as well as a 14-point lead.
Letran could only come as close as 10 points, 55-65, early in the final frame.
CSB had an answer ready, however, and Leutcheu’s four points in a row capped off a 9-1 run that re-increased their lead to 74-56.
Leutcheu wound up with 19 points and five rebounds and was backstopped by Haruna who had 15 markers, six boards, and five assists of his own.
For the Knights, Bong Quinto topped the scoring column with 22 points on top of seven rebounds and four assists. Their slow start doomed them, however, and they dropped to 13-5.
They go back to the drawing board and will have three days to prepare for twice-to-beat Lyceum of the Philippines University in their semifinals showdown.
