Arellano University is drawing from the winningest school in the NCAA as it tries to return to relevance.
For their next season, the Chiefs will be handled by Cholo Martin, currently an assistant coach for San Beda University. “Nagkaroon ng deliberation within Arellano and nag-shortlist kami. Out of the five names, the most number of endorsements was for Cholo Martin,” Peter Cayco, the school’s athletic director, said.
Martin has been with the Red Lions for the last five years and has won three championships there. He is also concurrently serving as mentor for the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League’s Pasay Voyagers.
Now, he takes over for Junjie Ablan who, for his part, was thrust into the position after the sudden resignation of Jerry Codinera midseason.
Codinera and Ablan coached Arellano to a 5-13 standing as they missed out on the Final Four for the second straight season.
Now, the Chiefs are nothing but hopeful to be able to move forward under Martin who will still have to fulfil his commitment with the Red Lions who are, at present, gearing up for the Final Four.
Once San Beda’s campaign is over, however, Martin will get to focus on an Arellano side which will be welcoming back all of Ian Alban, Levi Dela Cruz, and Maui Sera Josef.
He will be helped out by assistants Jaypree Belencion and Yvan Ludovice who once played for Colegio de San Juan de Letran and the Red Lions, respectively.
