“Dagger” Dan Arches made sure that Mapua High School remained on track for its ultimate goal in the NCAA 94 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

“Looking forward na makabawi kami sa La Salle kasi yun yung goal namin,” Arches said after he and the Red Robins disposed of San Beda High School in the Final Four to move into the Finals. “Kapag sila kalaban namin, iba talaga yung mindset and intensity.”

A year ago, College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills won its first championship in school history at the expense of Mapua.

Now, the two teams will face off once more for all the glory.

In the previous Finals, CSB-LSGH won Game 1, Mapua won Game 2, and CSB-LSGH won Game 3.

This year, the determination to avenge that Finals loss has been very much evident in the Red Robins as they swept the Junior Blazers in the elimination round. “Nagbu-boost po yung mga panalong yun ng confidence namin, pero ‘di rin kami masyadong kumpyansa kasi focused lang talaga kami,” Arches said.

Along with that, they will be getting another confidence booster in a healthier and hungrier main man Clint Escamis who injured his left knee towards the end of the elimination round before being brought back slowly in their two playoff games. “Okay naman siya. ‘Di lang namin pinupwersa so limited time lang muna,” head coach Randy Alcantara said.

Come the championship round, though, Escamis promises one thing. As he put it, “I’m hungrier than ever. Last year, they took away the chance na mag-back-to-back kami at sobrang sakit nun.”

He then continued, “Now, despite the challenges, we’re back sa Finals and eto na yung chance para ibawi namin yung mga kuya namin na nag-graduate na.”

Of course, the graduating guard knows full well that CSB-LSGH won’t just give up its crown. “It won’t be easy, but I’m positive we can kasi when I see my teammates and coaches in practice, sobrang gutom sila. I’m positive kayang-kaya naming i-sweep LSGH,” he said, full of confidence.
