LPU may very well have to win Game 1 of the NCAA Finals against San Beda without main man CJ Perez
Lyceum of the Philippines’ hump just got bigger in the Finals of the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament
The Pirates will not have main man CJ Perez in the lineup for Game 1 of their best-of-three championship series against defending champion San Beda University.
The NCAA has suspended Perez for one game after he filed his application for the 2018 PBA Draft, but failed to inform the league’s Management Committee (ManCom) about it.
The development was first reported by Rick Olivares of philstar.com.
In the long history of the league, graduating players have been told to inform the ManCom about their intentions of joining the PBA Draft.
Apparently, Perez, through his agent, was unable to do such and in an emergency meeting a week ago, was hit with a one-game suspension by the ManCom.
Unfortunately for LPU, he will have to serve that one-game suspension in the opener of the Finals opposite the Red Lions on Tuesday at the MOA Arena.
They will, therefore, be missing his per game counts of 18.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.3 steals.
Still, the Pirates have already filed a letter of appeal on the one-game suspension. According to sources, it will be discussed in another emergency meeting by the ManCom within the day.
With or without their graduating swingman, head coach Topex Robinson said he and his wards will trudge through. “Hindi ko na kontrolado yun. Basta ako, I’m here to win a championship and I’m gonna focus my 100 percent tomorrow,” he said.
LPU and San Beda split their two meetings in the season.
A year ago in the Finals, though, the Pirates were swept by the Red Lions.
