NCAA Finals: Vengeance not on the minds of LPU

Whether or not they win the championship, CJ Perez and LPU will keep on inspiring others
After missing the Final Four – and even more, the Finals – for six years, Lyceum of the Philippines will be in championship round for the second straight season.
Of course, head coach Topex Robinson is nothing but happy for the continued breakthrough of the young program. “It’s really a blessing to be in the Finals,” he told reporters after they kicked out Colegio de San Juan de Letran and moved into the next round.
Since joining the league in 2011, the Pirates have not made it past the eliminations.
That was until a year ago when they swept the elims and advanced automatically into the Finals.
However, once there, the upstarts from Intramuros bowed down to a dynastic San Beda University side.
This year, there was no such sweep, but they still took care of business in the Final Four to make a second straight trip to the championship round.
There, LPU will face off with the Red Lions once more.
Getting back at the defending champions, though, is not a thought for them in any way. “We are not saying that this is vengeance. It’s a stage for us to inspire people,” coach Topex said.
Indeed, ever since their breakthrough last year, the always amiable mentor has always said that their goal is to inspire – and winning a championship would just be a bonus for all of that.
That is even truer now that main man CJ Perez and team captain MJ Ayaay are down to their last few games. “What’s important is how we are cherishing these moments especially for these two,” coach Topex said, referring to his graduating key cogs.
Game 1 of the Finals between LPU and San Beda is slated for Tuesday at the MOA Arena. As always, all of the action will be on S+A, S+A HD, LIGA, LIGA HD and via livestream.
