With their opponents missing their main man in Game 1 of the NCAA 94 Finals, San Beda did nothing but take full advantage.

The Red Lions were firing on all cylinders and stamped their class all over a Lyceum of the Philippines University crew that did not have CJ Perez for a 73-60 rout on Tuesday at the MOA Arena.

Robert Bolick and Javee Mocon made their presence felt as always, but the defending champions also had much welcome contributions from reserves Clint Doliguez and Jeramer Cabanag. “I give credit to my boys because they did a good job today,” head coach Boyet Fernandez said post-game.

Mocon posted a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double while Bolick had 12 markers and nine assists.

Those two spearheaded their squad’s 19-9 start to the game and they were only joined by Doliguez and Cabanag who totaled 11 and eight points, respectively.

Donald Tankoua was also a force with 10 points and 16 rebounds to help San Beda score a convincing victory to open the best-of-three championship round.

That all-out attack overwhelmed the undermanned Pirates who only got going late, even coming as close as 60-70. “Kinabahan nga ako kung anong effort ipapakita nila because CJ is not there. They still showed up and played,” coach Boyet said.

The Red Lions had the answer, however, and sealed the deal on their third consecutive victory over LPU in the Finals dating back to last season.

More importantly, coach Boyet and his wards need just one more win for a three-peat.

Still, that’s easier said than done especially with Perez returning for the Pirates in Game 2 next Monday still at the same venue. “If it’s not broken, why fix it,” the hardworking mentor answered when asked about their adjustments for next game.

In his stead, Mike Nzeusseu topped the scoring column with 16 points to go along with 14 rebounds while Marcelino twins Jaycee and Jayvee chipped in 13 markers apiece.
