"I saw that was really the way we want to fight"
Two consecutive years in the NCAA Finals, two consecutive bridesmaid finishes.
Sure, it was heartbreaking for the Lyceum of the Philippines University but according to Coach Topex Robinson, he is much more pleased with their performance this year than last year.
It was apparent in Robinsons' demeanor.
In Season 93, he was in tears as the Lyceum Alma Mater Hymn played after the Bedan Hymn. But in Season 94, with his smiles and his usual warm aura, he seemed to be more at peace despite the identical disappointing result.
"I think because I saw that was really the way we want to fight. So yun yung mahalaga sa amin eh, alam ko na may peace of mind ako na we gave our best," said the Lyceum mentor after their 71-56 loss against eventual three-peat champions San Beda University.
"Last year, I feel like we're short, I feel like may hindi ako nagawa. But this time kasi, alam ko talagang yun yun," he added.
Choosing not to sulk over the loss, Robinson sees this as another opportunity to grow as a young basketball coach. According to him, coaching against much more experienced basketball minds like San Beda's Boyet Fernandez sharpens his coaching ways.
"I told Coach Boyet [Fernandez] nga and the rest of the San Beda coaches na 'Pinapagaling niyo ako kasi nga I'm not gonna stop as long as I know you are there, that is not gonna stop me from learning,'" he said.
By Season 95, Lyceum will no longer have the services of superstar CJ Perez, reliable leader MJ Ayaay, and the explosive Mike Nzeusseu. Their next lineup will be composed of lesser known players once again. This will put to test the strength of Lyceum's basketball program.
"I always go back to the time na I have no-namers, yung mga ganun ba. That's what exciting about this year kasi wala na dun star player eh so mas maganda kasi obviously hindi na kami target. We're gonna be underdogs now so yun yung excited ako," Robinson said.
"As much as I wanna cry about this, I look forward to what's in front of us, what's ahead of us. This is done and over with so nakikita ko yung lineup ko next year. It's gonna be an exciting lineup again," he added.
