Grand slam-seeking Arellano University tests the mettle of a new College of St. Benilde squad as the Lady Chiefs seek back-to-back wins.
Reigning back-to-back champion Arellano University gets a real test Tuesday when the Lady Chiefs face a solid College of St. Benilde squad in the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Chiefs, who are on the hunt for their second straight win, and the Lady Blazers duke it out in their 2:00 p.m. duel that will air via livestream.
Arellano U snatched an a straight sets, 25-15, 25-22, 25-22, victory over Jose Rizal University Friday in a rematch of last year’s Final Four.
Veteran Regine Arocha and Necole Ebuen, the Season 93 rookie of the year, delivered the goods for the Lady Chiefs in their first outing.
But against CSB, which is under a new system with head coach Jerry Yee, Arellano U will need to bring out the same intensity and aggressiveness that brought the Lady Chiefs to the throne.
“Yung nakita naming performance nila sa UniGames mas maganda ang ipinakita nila kaysa sa amin. Saka maganda ang team nila ngayon dahil nga sa pagpasok ng bagong setter,” said Arellano U coach Obet Javier. “Maganda rin na makaharap namin ang Benilde ng maaga para ma-challenge kami ng maaga.”
Yee, the former University of the Philippines mentor, replaced interim coach Arnold Laniog and injected a new system for the Lady Blazers.
CSB is considered as one of the top teams this season with the inclusion of transferee Jewel Lai, a prized setter from UP, that can utilize the deep arsenal of the Taft-based squad led by Maritess Pablo, Jan Daguil, Klarissa Abriam and solid middle in Rachel Austero.
