NCAA Season 94 volleyball: San Beda keeps hold of lead, wins back-to-back

San Beda University captured its second straight win at the expense of Mapua University.
San Beda University weathered a scare in the opening set before settling down as the Lady Red Spikers outmuscled Mapua University, 30-28, 25-17, 25-14, Tuesday to remain unscathed in the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Mendiola-based squad captured its second straight win in as many games.
Skipper Cesca Racraquin led last year’s runner-up Lady Red Spikers, who opened their campaign in a five-set squeaker over University of Perpetual Help.
The Season 92 Rookie of the Year tallied 13 points off 11 attacks and two aces while putting up 24 digs for San Beda. Nieza Viray and Sattriani Espiritu finished with 14 markers each while Trisha Paras got 10 for the Lady Red Spikers, who punished Mapua with 51 attack points.
San Beda found na revamped Lady Cardinals side a tough nut to crack in the opening set as Mapua kept the game close. The Lady Cardinals even got to set point first before the Lady Red Spikers forced a deuce.
Mapua then battled San Beda in a seesaw match before Racraquin sealed the set with a hit.
“I think ‘yung start sa amin parang masyado kaming nagri-relax. Kasi alam namin na parang, ewan ko, parang mas angat kami sa kailang team kaya nagri-relax kami,” said Racraquin. “Pero parang naging awakening sa amin yung bakbakan na ‘yun.”
“Noong second set nag-relax kami pero nagtatrabaho na and yung setter namin mas umayos ang set noong second set kumpara sa first set,” she added.
The Lady Cardinals, who finished the last two seasons winless, debuted with a setback.
Angelie Magundayao had nine points while Jan Morano and Carla Gaudan combined for 11 markers for Mapua.
Meanwhile, the Red Spikers survived a tough challenge by the Cardinals to eke out a 20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 15-5, win for a 1-1 slate.
Jeffrey Losa showed his scoring prowess with 23 points, 21 coming off attacks, while Angelo Torres got 18. Jomaru Amagan scored all of his points from attacks for San Beda, which dropped its opening day match against Perpetual.
Skipper Alfredo Pagulong had 15 points, Angelbert Navas posted 15 while Raje Hizon and Mark Egan finished with 14 each for Mapua.
