NCAA Season 94 volleyball: Lady Blazers claim second win

Rachel Austero scored 20 point to power College of St. Benilde to a four-set win over University of Perpetual Help.
College of St. Benilde bounced back from a first set setback before surviving a scare in the fourth frame to turn back University of Perpetual Help, 24-26, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21, Tuesday in the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Middle blocker Rachel Austero spearheaded the Lady Blazers second straight win in three outings with 20 points capped by back-to-back hits to seal the one-hour, 41-minute battle.
Setter Jewel Lai tallied 27 excellent sets to help the Lady Blazers pound 50 spikes. The University of the Philippines transferee added 10 digs while Klarisa Abriam and Maritess Pablo scored 14 and 10 markers, respectively, for the Taft-based squad.
CSB started out sluggish as the Lady Altas took advantage to steal the extended opening frame.
“Siguro nilalamig pa ng first set so we talke and made adjustments,” said CSB coach Jerry Yee, whose wards opened the season with a gallant stand against defending two-time champion Arellano University before falling in a five-set defeat.
The Lady Blazers went ahead, 18-12, in the fourth frame but allowed Perpetual to mount a rally to knot then set at 19. Lady Altas setter Angelou Castillo committed back-to-back errors that pushed CSB back on top.
The Lady Blazers opened a 23-20 gap before Jhona Rosal scored for the Lady Altas but Austero hammered a quick attack and followed it with a smash off Perpetual’s overreceive to seal the deal.
Cindy Imbo finished with 14 points while Blance Tripoli got nine for the Lady Altas, who fell to 1-2 slate.
