Defending two-time champion Arellano University claimed its fifth straight win in as many games to keep a share of the lead.
Reigning champion Arellano University finished off Lyceum of the Philippines University with a blistering scoring barrage to erase a two-point deficit in the third set and complete a 25-19, 25-20, 25-17, sweep Thursday as the Lady Chiefs tightened their hold of the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball competition lead at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Necole Ebuen and Carla Donato conspired in a 13-3 rally in the closing stretch of the third frame that pushed the three-peat-seeking Arellano U’s winning run to five straight for a two-way tie at the top spot with San Beda University.
Down, 12-14, in the third set, the Lady Chiefs connected eight straight points including consecutive aces by Donato to give Arellano U a 20-14 lead. The Lady Pirates stopped their bleeding with an off speed hit by Cherilyn Sindayen but with momentum on their side, the Lady Chiefs sealed the win with a 5-2 spurt.
“Nagsimula kami sa error (sa third set). Para sa amin yun ang pinaka-crucial kasi eh kumbaga pumuntos ang kalaban na walang hirap. Buti na lang ang mga bata kahit papaano nag-stick pa rin sa pinag-uusapan namin na ano ba talaga ang pakay namin bakit pumupunta kami rito sa arena,” said Arellano U coach Obet Javier.
Ebuen finished with 17 points with 14 coming off attacks while Donato had 12 markers off five aces, four kills and three kill blocks for the Lady Chiefs. Princess Bello scored all of her eight points on attacks.
LPU suffered its third straight defeat and fell to 1-4 mark.
Rocelyn Hongria was the only Lady Pirate in double figures with 14 while Bien Juanillo and Mikaela Rafael had seven each.
